Giraffe are everywhere in Africa, right? These gentle giants are probably one of the most loved animals around the world and their images are widely used from children’s apparel to marketing a wide range of products. But did you know that giraffe are already extinct in at least seven African countries and that there are less than 100,000 giraffe remaining in all of Africa – this is only a quarter of the African elephant population. In addition, we now believe that there are four different species of giraffe – not just one. Some of these four species were recently listed as Critically Endangered and are facing a silent extinction.

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) is at the forefront of saving giraffe in the wild but this requires collaborations from throughout the world. We work with key conservation partners (governments, NGOs, research institutions, zoos and local communities) in 12 African countries and internationally to make a difference. Our focus is on educating about the plight of giraffe, understanding the different threats they are facing and how to best counteract these and, most importantly, we implement a range of giraffe conservation actions in Africa for their long-term survival. Together we can make a difference, but we have to start act now before it is too late.

Based in Windhoek, Namibia, Dr Julian and Stephanie Fennessy are the Directors of the GCF, the only NGO in the world that concentrates solely on the conservation and management of giraffe in the wild throughout Africa. Both members of the IUCN SSC Giraffe & Okapi Specialist Group, Julian is the Giraffe Co-Chair.
