“Chick was always playful; there was this kind of joy in his playing, and almost a childlike playfulness, like we’re playing in a sandbox, and it brought joy to me and then I would feed something and it would bring joy to him.” -Herbie Hancock
“He completely devastated the landscape. It was like scorched earth — so musical, so powerful, so incredibly virtuosic.” -Sting
“I think some of our best individual playing happened with Chick because of that musical environment that he created.” -John Patitucci
“You don't have to be Picasso or Rembrandt to create something. The fun of it, the joy of creating, is way high above anything else to do with the art form.” -Chick Corea
A DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, 27-time Grammy winner, and piano/keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea (1941 – 2021) has attained legendary status after five decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply staggering. Chick is one of the most-nominated artists in the history of the Grammys, with 71 nominations. He's also earned 5 Latin Grammy Awards, with an additional 7 nominations. From straight ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children's songs to chamber music, along with some far-reaching forays into symphonic works, Chick had touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illustrious career while maintaining a standard of excellence that is awe-inspiring.
A tirelessly creative spirit, Chick was named Artist of the Year three times between 2014 and 2018 in the DownBeat Readers Poll, a publication that called him “a pianist virtually without peer.” In addition to his legacy as a creative and inspiring instrumentalist and improvisor, he is just as well known for his musical compositions.
The Joshua Bowlus Trio, with a handful of special guests, will be exploring a wide variety of Chick’s music – performing selections from his first few albums as an artist to some of his most recent recordings before his passing. It is hard to put into words the impact Chick and his music has had on the world. One thing is certain – his music was full of beauty and joy, and it is contagious. Join us at Blue Jay for a joyful night celebrating one of the greatest musicians of our time.
